World Book Day (April 23rd) was started by the UN to celebrate publishing and print books. Call it a *high five* to readers worldwide.

Why do I celebrate World Book Day?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve liked sharing books, giving books away, buying books for friends. Books are precious. I believe they are society’s great equalizer. If you have access to books, you can change the world, expand your mind, grow as a person. And who doesn’t like the idea of getting smarter?

In years past I worked as a librarian (part-time in college) and volunteered as an adult literacy tutor. Later, I taught 5th and 6th grade students who were functionally illiterate. Β Can you tell I have a passion for books and reading for everyone? In fact, the only time I ever became politically active was when our local school board tried to shut down our elementary school libraries…but that’s a post for another time.Β

Everyone deserves access to books. Libraries do that for us. So, please support your local library. Spread the love about World Book Day and curl up somewhere comfy and read.Β

Cheers to you Reader!
