Most of the men, short on coin, hungered for a fight now that peace became a fragile thing. They clutched drinking horns, arguing answers to their own question: Who’d sit on Svea’s throne?
She cared who would be king. She truly did, but the disquieting fact weighed heavy on her that any one of these men could claim her. Glancing down at her woefully plain tunic, Sestra yanked her low neckline high, hiding the goods as it were.
“May he be wealthy and generous, but not too generous,” she mused aloud.
Men who gave much expected much. And she was done with that.
Stepping from the shadows on determined legs, Sestra tugged her ample bodice up again. With one hand yanking on the neckline, her gaze collided with Brand’s. The rough-souled warrior’s grey stare skimmed her form, catching on her awkward grip. She let go and grabbed her pitcher with too much fervor, sloshing ale over the rim.
“What are you staring at?” she snapped.
“Sestra.” He tipped his head in greeting, and she caught signs of mirth crinkling the corners of his eyes.
